Cultural Seeds

Ancient Seeds. Generational Knowledge. A Sovereign Future.

About Cultural Seeds.

At the Canadian Black Farmers Association (CBFA), cultural seeds are more than planting material, they are living history.

These ancient crops, carried through generations, embody tradition, identity, and resilience. Each seed holds ancestral knowledge and the foundation of our food systems.

Today, CBFA is restoring that legacy. We are making these cultural seeds available exclusively to Black farmers, gardeners, and community growers across Canada, so we can reclaim our rightful place in the agricultural landscape.

A Trusted Source of Cultural Seeds in Canada.

CBFA supports farmers and communities with culturally significant, climate-adapted seeds sourced through integrity and care.

Our seeds originate from:

  • Local Canadian harvests, where traditional crops have been grown, tested, and adapted for Canadian conditions.
  • Our sister farm in Nigeria, part of the 50 Acres Plus Project, where seeds are nurtured on rich, natural, and untouched land.

Through this connection between origin and adaptation, we provide seeds that are both authentic to their heritage and viable for cultivation across Canada.

Natural, Pure, and Rooted in the Land.

Our seeds honour the land, the growers, and the communities they sustain. Each variety reflects purity, resilience, and cultural integrity.

All CBFA seeds are:

  • 100% natural and non-GMO
  • Grown without chemical alteration or genetic modification
  • Sourced from fertile, unmanipulated environments
  • Carefully preserved to maintain their true characteristics

These are seeds as our ancestors knew them, pure, resilient, and deeply rooted in identity.

Cultural Food Sovereignty.

Access to cultural seeds is essential for food sovereignty.

For too long, Black, African, and Caribbean communities in Canada have relied heavily on imported foods, often inconsistent in quality, costly, and disconnected from local ecosystems.

By restoring access to cultural seeds, CBFA empowers communities to:

  • Grow their own culturally preferred foods
  • Reclaim control over food production and distribution
  • Strengthen community-based food systems
  • Reduce dependence on global supply chains

This work goes beyond farming, it’s about reclaiming identity, knowledge, and collective independence.

From Generation to Generation.

Seed saving and sharing are ancestral practices passed down through care and purpose.

Through the CBFA Cultural Seeds Initiative, we are:

  • Preserving traditional crops for future generations
  • Adapting heritage seeds to thrive in Canadian conditions
  • Passing on skills and traditions through mentorship and hands-on training
  • Building a lasting legacy of culturally rooted agriculture in Canada

Each seed tells a story. Each harvest continues that story.
